WELCOME TO H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND.

AN INVITATION TO MR CHURCHILL.

(Per Press Association—Copyright).

LONDON, December 12

On being invited by the Navy League to a luncheon on Decomber 16, in honour of Captain Halsey and the other officers of H.M.S. New Zealand, Mr Winston Churchill demurred, alleging that partisan speeches were unsuited to professedly non-party gatherings. He instanced Lord Selbourne's speech at the Xavy League banquet last October, in which Lord Selbourne, criticised Mr Churchill's " holiday " | proposal speech. I The League replied that no member

of its Executive Committee or any other officer of the League had ever criticised the Admiralty on such occasions as the one contemplated., The proceedings at the coming luncheon would be wholly devoted to welcome the New Zealand back to England, showing that the Motherland appreciated the kindness and hospitality extended to the officers and crew during the cruise of the New Zealand. Thereupon the invitation was accepted by Mr Churchill.
