CHRISTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.
At last night's meeting of the City Council the By-laws Committee reported that a by-law regarding hat-pins nud been drafted, but was being held over for some other amendments which the committee proposed to ask the Council to make to the by-laws before submitting it for approval.
The seating accommodation for the general public in the City Council chamber was not sufficient last evening to provide for those who attended. The attraction obviously was the expectation of a heated dispute on strike matters. In this respect they were not disappointed, for at times the atmosphere of the chamber was very sultry.
'' Emily , Denham appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr H. -W. Bishop, S.M., charged with having, on. November 15, at Christchurch, stolen a pair of field-glasses, valued at £10 10s, the property of J; N. Fowke. The accused was fined 40s, in default one month's imprisonment, and was ordered to pay the costs. The glasses were handed back to the owner.
The Mayor of Lyttelton stated at I. last night's meeting of the Borough i Council that the community was very distressed that . the industrial trouble was still unsettled. They felt that things had not improved as they might have dorie. He was very sorry that some of the waterside workers had broken their word given to him as Mayor of the town. Their action had lowered the dignity of Lyttelton, and affected its reputation detrimentally. Outsiders thought that the Council was not doing its duty in the matterpbut he could assure them that the local' body was doing its utmost to pacify the workers. He hoped, however, that out of the present evil would come good, and that the Workers would recognise that there were better means than the strike for settling Labour troubles.
