FOUR HOUSES DESTROYED

CHRISTCHURGH. October 16

A fire which occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning in_ Milne Street, Sydenham, resulted in the total destruction of four houses, while a fifth was badly damaged.

■ The houso partially destroyed was | No. 22, owned by Mrs H. Johnston, and insured with the United Insurance Company for £125, and the household goods with fche "Victoria Insurance Company for £100. The houses completely destroyed were: —No. 24; unoccupied, and owned by Mr W. J. Sarkeld, of 69 St. Alban.3. Street. Insurance, £80 in the State Fire Office. No. 26; unoccupied, aud owned by Mr Pearse. Insured in State Fire Office for £100. No. 28; occupied by Mr Andrew Belamy, and owned by Mrs E. M. Shortland, of 6 Antigua Street. The building was insured with the Phcpnix 'Insurance Company i'or £100. There, was no insurance on the furniture. No.' 30; occupied by Miss Sandford, and owned by Mr Joseph Rawlins. The building was insured for £135 in the State Fire Office, and there was no insurance on the household goods.

WELLINGTON, October 15. A seyen-roomed house at "Upper Hutt, occupied by the Rev. Father Daly, was burned down yesterday morning. Father Daly was aroused at an early hour by smoke, and only managed to , escape by getting out on the verandah roof, whence neighbours assisted him to the ground. The building was insured for £400 in the'; Norwich Union Office, and the furniture for ■ £250 in the United Office. Prizes for a coming bazaar, to-the value of £40 or £50, were also destroyed.

DUNEDIN, October 16. The Public Library at Alexandra South has been destroyed by fire. The building was ins'ared for £8 ss. and the books and fittings for £190, in the Royal Office.
