CHRISTCMURCH DAY BY DAY

At Lytteltori last night presentations were made to Canon Coates, who has resigned after 22 years' work in the port.

Preparations are being made by the General Synod of the Anglican Church for the celebration of the Marsden Centenary next year.

The Board of Governors of Christ's College has appointed a special committee in reference to the subject of imported tweeds for students attending the College, and has communicated with the • Industrial Association, which is now arranging for a convenient date on which the committee will receive a deputation from the Association.

With a view to encouraging the various Christchurch teams that are to compete in the military tournament at Auckland to aim at high efficiency, and with a view to assist in raising the funds necessary to enable the Territorials and Senior Cadets to make the trip, a military tournament has been arranged to take place in King Edw,ard Barracks, on December,2 and 3. A very attractive programme, has, been arranged. There will also be an obstacle race, open to all members of the defence' forces, over a quarter-mile course with a set course of obstacles; and a relay race over 400 yards, open to teams of four. .

The Tramway Appeal Board met yesterday to consider the case of a conductor whose record had. been endorsed for missing a fare. The Chairman announced that the Board had unanimously decided that in tlie present case the regulations could have been complied with, and as the facts were admitted the appeal would be dismissed. " But the nominated members of the Board wish to record that they igree with the remarks made by the Chairman to the effect that the deffuilting passengers and defaulting conductors should be treated alike, and reconunend- that the inspectors should be instructed to take names and addresses of defaulting passengers, as well as conductors, so that they mrv be dealt with according to the bylaws."
