A QUESTION OF FEES

SPORTS ASSOCIATION AND THE

COUNCIL

At tho meeting of the Ashburton Domain Board last evening, a letter wjis received from the Ashburton Sports Association in regard to the motion paused by die Board on tho subject of l.h<» rental to be charged the A.A.C. and A.C. and the Ladies' Swimming Club. The letter stated that there was some misunderstanding, as it was felt that tho Board did not wish to enforce payment by individual members of the Sports Association of monies from club's which, although assessed, had never affiliated with the Association. The amount (£4 19s 3d) mentioned in the Association's last letter had been collectod, however, from the two defunct clubs referred to, and the Association awaited the Board's decision as to its disposal. Taking into account the fact that the Board had from time to tune advispd tho Association to establish a reserve fund, perhaps tho Board would bo willing to leavo the amount in tho Association's hands for that purpose. The Mayor said that it had been agreed at the last meeting that the Board could make no reduction in the amount at which the Association had been assessed.

Cr Davison_ said that the Sports Association did its best year by year to moot its obligations. *Tl would be rather hard to say to the Sports Association that it must pay what it had not received. Its liabilities had been well mot this year and he could gC back and point to some years when the Domain Board had had groat trouble in getting feos from certain clubs. Tho | Sports Association had received no funds; it merely said: "We give you all we get; will you accept it?" He thought that the Board would be wise ■if .it did accept it. The grounds would 'still have to be attended to if tho Association did not exist. The Sports Association was working for the benefit of the whole town. Ho asked that the Association's request be acceded to. He had told the Association years ago to get a smnll reserve fund which it could draw upon. Cr Feminan said he was desirous of assisting the Association, but on the right lines. He had boon the treasurer of the Association some years ago, and it then had two delegates from each body. If r,ho Hoflrtl made it easy for the various clubs in the Association, it would not be doing them any good, i What did tho Association do with all , the donations it received? J

Cr'Orr said he had supported ,tho previous motion, but sinco then ho had discovered that those cluhr; had not come into existence. Tt would bo- havd for tho Sports Association if it had to take the risk of clubs forming. These clubs had not formed tin's season. JJc still thought they should stick to any agreement made, but ho had alterod his opinion as regards those two clubs. Cr Davison p;ovo notice of, motion that tho resolution passed at', last mooting be rescinded. The Mayor snicl ihnt, tho agreement rend " affiliated " clubs. ■ These clubs had not oflfilia'tpd, so tho Council had no hold upon them. The Clerk stated that tho clubs hold their annual meetings so lato now that it was impossible for ?iny definite arrangement to bo pome to. Tho SJayoi 1 ruled Lhr-i if the Council was unanimous it could rescind tho resolution that night. Cr Christian questioning this ruling, the Mayor accepted the notice of motion.
