MR THOMAS JEFCOATE.
Another .of, the fast diminishing band of the early settlers of the South Canterbury district passed away in Christchurch Hospital yesterday. This was Mr Thomas Jefcoate, who for many years lived at Prospect Farm, on the banks of the Upper Pareora, beside what is now called Jefcoate's' crossing. Mr Jefcoate came out by the big ship '•'Eastern Empire" in January, 1865, and for a time lived in Christchurch, founding what- is iiow the Spreydon Baptist Church. In. 1868 he came down with his family in a dray, to take up land at Pareora, and on the way ran serious risks, especially when crossing the flooded Rangitata. Besides farming his land Mr Jefcoate acted as a contractor, making many miles of the road to Fairlie; a~nd a good length of the Mount Somers railway. He also made some of the big cuttings that still exist in the ./"railway Tine round Caroline Bay, Timaru. . ' .
