■ ♦ ■ ; Mr H. O. Lowther, British Ambassador to Chili, has been appointed ambassador at Copenhagen. The Hon. It. Heaton Rhodes, Post-master-General, left for Wellington by the Maori last- night. Mr.i J. Macaulay,, member of the Land Board, went north by the first -express to-day;. MFW. T, Wood, for some years member for Palmerston, is removing from that district, owing to the state of his health. It'is. stated that Mi; W. H. Field, ex-M.P. for. Otaki, will contest the seat, at the next election in the interests, of the Government. The Rev. T. G. Hammond, Maori Missioner, arrived in: Ashburton on Tuesday evening, and left,for the north this afternoon. Mr W. H. Gould, first assistant at T-e Aro School, Wellington, has been appointed to the position of Principal ■of the Royal College and Director of Education' at Tonga. A cable message from Frema-ntle states that Mr Evelyne Wrench, organiser of the Overseas Club, has Arrived from England, botmd for Wellington, ■where h& begins his propaganda work. Ah Eketahuna telegram says that Mr F. C. Turner was unanimously elected Mayor of the Council on Monday night to fill tho vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Page, who, has been appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate. Miss Fraser, late Principal of Wanganui Girls' College, who has been appointed Principal of Havelock NoTth Presbyterian Ladies' College, was introduced to and welcomed by the General Assembly in Wellington to-day. Mr G. S. Mathews, on his leaving Christchurch for Ashburton, was presented, on Monday evening, ; with a travelling rug and umbrella by the members of the Lin wood Football Club,. He was also the recipient of a. hand- » some case of pipes from the Linwood Cricket Club. , ■ -The Wellington correspondent of the "Press' 'reports that Sir Joseph Ward will proceed to England next; month, and that the Leadership of the Opposition will remain, in abeyance until his return. The indications are, however, that Sir Joseph will next session be again found at the head of the Liberal "'Party. ■ '■" . . _.; " ■■■ A Dunedin telegram says that some time ago. it'was stated that Mr W. Scott, the employers' representative on the Arbitration Court Bench, intended resigning his position.. When seen yesterday Mr Scott stated that he .had not yet made up his mind about the ■'••matter. . The pressure of business ."jvas the. reason for his considering the matter. His Excellency the Governor opened the annual exhibition of tho Dunedin Art Society yesterday afternoon. In the evening he, inspected .the. Boy Scouts, and opened.the"V.-M.C.A. new buildings. To-day .he is to be present at a demonstration to* be given by the"returned New Zealand .Cadets, and in tlio"evening he will open the Dunedin branch of the Overseas Club. Miss Lorimer, principal of tho Nelson Girls' College, received news by cable to-day of the death ,in' England of Miss M. Kirton, .first a^sist^nt/ mistress-. at the College^ who left in April for a holiday tour in Europe. Miss Kirton was the daughter of Mr R. Kirton, formerly chief postmaster here, and now residing at New Plymouth. She graduated at Canterbury College and had been on the staff of.the College for ten years. The news of her untimely death icatne as a great shock to her colleagues and the pupils, by whom she was held, in. affectionate regard.
