/ Ihe practice of renting pews, which is m vogue in many Auckland clrarches, was responsible for an incident in St Matthew's Church last Sunday, a woman demanding in a very audible voice- that a visitor should give up her seat, as.it was " rented by her husband, and her husband was coming to church to-day." After some very unorthodox behaviour in the church, the offending visitor left the seat into which she had been shown by the verger and took up her position in a seat bearing a placard informing all arid sundry that it was "free." i

A few weeks ago 'Mr A. S. Biss brought before the Wellington Chamber of Commerce the inconvenience incurred in the public being only able to purchase railway tickets at the stations a few minutes before the train left. To overcome this inconvenience, . a system has been adopted of issuing coupons at certain places in. town which can be exchanged at the booking office for the ordinary ticket. The New Zealand Express Company has written to the Chamber of Commerce notifying that it. has been appointed one of the agents in Wellington to issue coupons, and noin&ng out that luggage may be checked on production of the coupon, instead of having to wait, as formerly, until the ticket itself is produced. The chairman at the last meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr A. E. Mabin) said it was a concession, but did not go half far enough. They had still to get their tickets in exchange for coupons at the last minute. It was really only a concession to those who wished to check their luggage. The opinion was gener-j ally expressed that the coupon system did not jneet the case satisfactorily.
