ANNIVERSARY NOTES.
Two battle anniversaries fall on today's date—the capture of Oporto by the-French in 1809, and the battle of El Teb. The latter engagement took place in 1884, near where Baker Pasha had been defeated at the beginning of February. After a fruitless attempt at negotiation General Graham, with about 4000 men of the 10th and 19th Hussars, .Gordon Highlanders, the Black Watch, Lancashire and Yorkshire Battalions and Marines, advanced on the rebels in the forenoon. The latter numbered about 12,000, and offered -a. most desperate, heroic resistance, but by 2.30 p.m. they were totally defeated with the loss of 2000. The British lost five officers and 24 men killed, and 142 wounded The following day Tokar surrendered and the;rebel garrison fled.
