His Lordship Bishop Julius passed through Ashburton by the first express north this afternoon. • Mr.Albert Crumwas a passenger for the north by this afternoon's express. Mr John Kennedy, arrived in Ashburton by r the first „ express from the south to-day. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, Miss Ward, and Mr G. Ward, together with Sir James Carroll, left for Wellington by the Moari, on Saturday night. The vessel was delayed until ten o'clock, and the large crowd which assembled on the wharf at Lyttelton gave the party a hearty send-off, cheers being given for Sir Joseph and Lady Ward and Sir James Carroll* A New Plymouth message announces the death of Mrs Okey, mother of Mr H. J. H. Okey, member for Taranaki, aged 82 years. She was born in Gloucestershire', and resided in New Plymouth since 1857. Her husband predeceased her two years ago. The deceased, during the Maori War, refused to obey the orders of the military authorities to leave with all women for Nelson, hiding in the bush so as to stay with her husband. The authorities sent no women away afterwards. She leaves four sons and two daughters. The Auckland '.."Church Gazette," (Anglican) says :—" WV regret to announce that the Archdeacon of Taranaki, owing to continued ill-health, has been obliged to send his resignation to the Bishop of the Archdeaconry of Taranaki, arid also of his superintendence of the Home Mission; the Archdeacon has been advised to take at least two years'. absolute rest from all work. Archdeacon Cole has done more hard work for the diocese than most of our people have any idea of. Apart from the Archdeaconry of Taranaki, which in itself is no sinecure, he will long be , held in grateful memory as the organ- . iser of the Home Mission.
