ATTEMPTS TO WRECK TRAINS.
FIGHTING AND BATON CHARGES
(Received August 21, 9 a.m.) LONDON, August 20. A diabolical but unsuccessful attempt to derail a mail and passenger train was made at Taff Vale, by loosening the rails, but it was opportunely discovered. ''-: ..--•': The strikers and miners destroyed the rails in Erewash Valley and stopped the Midland Scotch express and two other' trains. Troops from Derby cleared the line. Several persons were injured in baton charges in an attempt to wreck a signal-box at Stafford. The strikers at York stoned passing trains, rushed the station gates and attempted to wreck two trains. The. military then occupied the station. Two Dover stations were closed and also 1 a dozen stations in London and on the Great Northern .lino at Nottingham. Two thousand troops had been sent to Swindon, and the troops at Alderney and Guernsey were summoned to England' on strike duty. The Great Eastern railway was unable to guarantee delivery and requested a suspension of German shipments. Bolton and Liverpool, were within a day or two of starving. Cardiff had only one-tenth of its' usual milk supply. Margate and Ramsgate were short of provisions and many visitors quitted. . ; ; ; ' immense quantities ' of, perishable goods are at a standstill on the eastern coast.
Owing to rioting, a thousand troops were sentVto Leicester. The races at Wolverhampton were postponed.
An express at King's Cross Station, by. a mistake itt signalling,;. narrowly escaped a collision.
