REAL REASON OF THE STRIKE.
THE CONCILIATION BOARDS
LONDON, August 19
"The Times" declares that the real issue is- the admission of the Union leaders to the Conciliation Boards. Tlie North-Eastern Railway Company for a
long time permitted such access, but that line has suffered more than the others through constant friction and the present strike.
LONDON, August 20
The "Railway Gazette" states that the real reason of the strikes was that the Conciliation Boards provided a safety-valve, reduced the opportunity of the unions to call strikes and weakened the power of the unions to compel men to join them.
The "Daily Chronicle" described the strikes as wanton and the opinion of the community was dead against their authors. There was much enthusiasm at the Central Station in - Manchester on the resumption of work. A number of the London and Brighton Railway strikers have applied to be allowed to .resume work. The tramways in Liverpool-have-resumed running, and the railwaymen at Stroud and Chatham have returned to work.
