■ A conference of 'th© S^ate Treasurer, Mr Barnes, representing the State Kuo-ar mills, representatives of the Su^ar producers' Association, and representatives of inter-State labour unions, was opened this-afternoon. Mr Barnes was voted to the chair, and explained the position in regard to the strike Ho announced that the representative® of the various unions had been empowered to negotiate for a settlement. • ■. In the event of an attempt beirfg made to work nonunion cargoes, the engineers and seamen will also be drawn into the dispute. The Coal Lumpers .and Clerks Unions are attempting to influence the clerks not to handle * cargo. The position has become grave, me . Newcastle men are also affected:
