, The- death has just taken place of Mr Jonathan Dixon,'manager for the Westport Coal Company at Westport. The deceased;,' who was/ 08 years of age, had a large and varied experience, having been about sixteen'years a mine manager in New South Wales a-nd about two years a Government inspector of mines in that State. He is survived by a widow and severifof a- tamily— one of his sons being manager of the Westport Coal Company's Coalbrookdale mine. ,
Mr J. B. Thomson, a well-known resident of Duncdin, died very suddenly yesterday afternoon as the .result _ot 'heart failure. He arrived wl^ 5 and was Mayor of Dunedin-in,1882. Mr Thomson was seventy-one-years,of age:
The death occurred at Christchurch, last night of Miss Griffiths j who acted as matron of the Ashbnr'ton County Hospital for upwards of five years. A few months ago, Miss Griffiths was compelled to resign her position on account of failing health, and subsequently she underwent a painful operation at the Christcliurch Hospital. She rallied from the effects of the operation, but a relapse vset in and she had several paralytic seizures, anl - lapsed into an unconscious state from which she failed to recover. Miss Griffiths, who was held in very high respect by a- large circle of friends, had an'extensive experience of nursing in, several of the chief hospitals in the Dominion, and in the exercise of her profession she was exceptionally kind, practical and clever. The announcement of her^ death has excited profound regret among her large circle of friends in Ash burton, Grey mouth, and Christchurch.
