PERSONAL.

The death occurred ■ on Wednesday afternoon of Mr A. F. Kennedy, manager for Messrs Williams and Kettle, Gisborne. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Robert Lambie, Anama, in respect of the death of their infant son, which occurred suddenly this morning at the residence of Mr George Lamb, senr., Hamp'stead.

The death is announced, "in Paris, of Mr John Gates, an American millionaire, and the introducer of barbed wire.

A representative gathering of settlers was held on Wednesday night in the Wainramu Hall to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs 1 James Paterson.. who have left the distriqt and retired to their newly-erected' home at Gore. Mr and Mrs .Paterson went south from Ashbu'rton seven years ago, took up land on the estate purchased by Messrs Friedlander Bros. The land was then iri its rough state, and having transformed what looked like a sea of waving tussock into an up-to-date and model farm, Mr and Mrs Paterson have docided to retire, in favour of their sons. The social-was a great success, the timo being spent in dancing, interspersed with musical items. About 12 o'clock supper was provided by the ladies, after which a presentation was made to Mr and Mrs Paterson.
