LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

WELLINGTON, August 9. The Council met at 2.30 p.m.. CONDOLENCE. A brief motion, recording the valuable services of the late Mr Fracer, ex-Member, and expressing sympathy with the bereaved family, was adopted, on the motion of the Hon. J. Me Gowan, seconded by the Hon. G. Jones. CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES. The ballot for the Chairmanship of Committees in the Council resulted in the re-election of the Hon. W.- 6. F. Carncross. The Hon John Rigg was the only other candidate. ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. The Hon. J. McGowan, in traversing the speeches 1 of tho Address-in-Reply, contended) that, in order to give an incentive to settlement on the land, every farmer employing a man should be compelled to give that man a portion of his land. ' This would result in the land being utilised to the fullest extent.
The Hon. J. P, Sinclair haying said a few words 1, the Address-in Reply was agreed to, and the Coimcil adjourned until tho 10th inst.
