SYDNEY, May 23. A Chinese merchant, who has just returned from a visit to the Celestial Empire, states that the recent uprising was an attempt by two or three thousand youths and young men to overthrow the Manchu rule In the Canton 'provinces. They were well armed, but lacked organisation. . Since the rebellion was quelled, there has been a close surveillance of queueless persons, because 70 per cent, of the revolutionaries are without that appendage.
