The steamer Papanui struck a rock— probably an uncharted one—six miles west of Watcrhousc Island, at 8.30 on ■Honda- evening. The captain is reticent, but it has-been learned that the vessel was travelling thirteen knots, and was brought to a sudden standstill with a 'terrific shock. The boats were got ready, and the barque Eassa, observing the signals of distress,, went to the steamer's assistance; but the.Papanux floated off easily, after being aground for several hours.
