Two, hatch covers, a piece of a gangway, and an old-fashioned deck chair were washed ashore on Manly Beach. The wreckage had apparently been in a fire. The hatch covers are marked P2 over LB. * A CHIEF OFFICER DROWNED. Received December 15, 9.50 a.m. . SYDNEY, December 15. Mr Witt, the chief officer on the German mail liner Plaven, accidentally fell overboard when twenty miles off the coast, on a voyage from New Caledonia to Sydney. A life-buoy was thrown, which he got hold of, and a boat was lowered, but Witt was evidently taken hold of by a large shark. THE HEAT IN SYDNEY.
