TEACHERS' RAILWAY PASSES.
Per Press Association
AUCKLAND, October 1. A deputation consisting of Mr J. Hi. McKenzie, acting-chairman, and Mr E. Crowe, secretary of the Auckland Education Board,' waited upon the Minister of Education, the Hon. G. Fowlds, this morning. The deputation stated that for many years teachers had been allowed concessions in the nature of free railway passes to enable them to attend training classes. Notice had now been received that these passes were no longer to bo issued. The deputation asked that the Minister should reconsider the matter.
Mr Fowlds said that the passes were! to have ceased issue in September, but it had beer decided to allow them to go on up to the end of the year. After, that, however, they would not be '!xe-/ newed. If the Education Board could; show him how to save £5000 a year* in' the expenditure of the Education Department it might be possible to do something in the matter. On special occasions passes would be issued for the use of country teachers attending summer or winter classes, but otherwise thoy would not be issued after the end of the year, as the results of the system had not been satisfactory, arid thero was reason to believo there had been considerable abuse.
