; Mr R. Curtis returned to Ashburton I to-day from a trip to Australia. A borough councillor states that it I would cost £800 to lay down properly I broken metal on East street, from the Post Office to the Traffic bridge. A correspondent states that, although the weather was bitterly cold at Methven to-day, no rain had fallen I up till 3.30 p.m. [ Mr Bates telegraphed to-day as follows : Northerly strong winds to a gale, probably increasing after twelve hours; I rain is probable, and unsettled weather may be expected; the glass will fall. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education and Immigration, accom- | panied by Mr W. Crow (private secrej tary) returned north by this afternoon's express. The Minister has (several engagements in Christeluirch to-morrow, and will not reach Wellington till Sunday morning. A concert was given on Thursday evening in St. Stephen's schoolroom, in aid of the church funds. There was a fairly large attendance, and the Rev. E. Whitehouse, who presided, made a few appropriate introductory remarks. The programme consisted mainly of items given by pupils of St. Stephen's and Hampstead Sunday schools, the preparatory training having been successfully supplied by Misses Claridge and M. White. Among the items were sash-and-clnb drill exercises, by girl pupils; songs, by the boys and girls; part songs, by the elder pupils. Misses M. Squire, L. White, Cowan, Butterick, Hayes (2), It. Claridge and Stills took part in a dialogue, which caused much merriment. The accompaniments were played by Misses Claridge and F. Smith, while the work of decorating the schoolroom had been carried out by the teaching staffs. The items forming the programme were given an effectiveness that reflect credit on both the scholars and teachers.
