The results of the Ashburton Harrier's Club cross-country Tace this afternoon, over, approximately, a 4-mile course, are as follows: E. Coker (15 sec), 23min osec 1; L. Hill (scr) 23min 23sec 2; P. Smith (1* mm), 23 mm. 33sec 3. A protest was entered against the winner by L. Hill, on the grounds of not keeping to the course laid down. The llev. E. Eliot Chambers professed a great admiration last night for the Wcsleyans m Cornwall, whom he described as "jolly good chaps." They would go m the morning to hear their local preachers, who gave them the red-hot Gospel, and m the evening they .would go to hear Mr Chambers, whom they called Parson Chambers; but he was glad to have them worship m their own way. While on this point, the speaker expressed some disgust with the sacredotatism which^has crept into too many churches m Eng-. land, and then, with an impatient gesture and strong epithet, he dismissed the subject. The Wellington Post states that if, as is suggested, the coming session lasts for only a few days, members will have no opportunity of voting on the question of the sale- of liquor at Bellamy's. The section of the Legislature Act dealing with the subject is as follows: "Ln the first session 1 of each new Parliament, on the fourth Tuesday after the Address-in-lleply has been determined by the House of Representatives, the Clerk of each House shall conduct a poll, at which members of such House shall vote on the question, ' Shall liquor be sold within the precincts of the Parliament Buildings during the remainder of the present Parliament?'" The same tiling occurred m 1897 and 1903, and on neither occasions was the vote taken, Bellamy's being kept open as usual.
