METHVEN NEWS.
Upon a charge of vagrancy, James Edward Nelson was convicted , and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, by Mr Morgan,-J.-P., at Metbven on Saturday. I have to report that, during the past week, there have been further heavy falls of rain; m fact, we have had rain on every day for some. time. On Wednesday last the fall was 1 the heaviest we have had for some time. The farmers are becoming rather anxious- about the- prospects of the harvest.. Rust' has appeared m a mild form m some fields of wheat, but it is not expected that much damage will be occasioned thereby. So far it appears on the leaf only, which will not affect 1 the grain. Some of the heavier crops of wheat are going down, but if i fine weather prevails from this time on, none will be lost. The cocksfoot has suffered somewhat m this direction, but hot weather would revive most of it. A number of strangers are already making their appearance m the district', having the harvest m view. I Should favourable weather be experi- | eiiced through the harvest, there will be a large amount of work to; do m this district, the crops being so heavy. I —Own correspondent.
