FIRES.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHIJHCH, October 19. An alarm of fire was given lo the Brigade about 9.40 p.m. on Saturday, from a box near the Star and Garter Hotel, for a fire which occurred in a six-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr Lightfoot, situated in Melrose Street, off Madras Street. The fire was discovered in a bedroom, and before it was put out by two neighbours and the motor chemical, it had destroyed part of the wall and the ceiling. The insurances are": —Building £250, and furniture £175 in the National Office. The damage is estimated at £10. At about 2.15 on Saturday afternoon a fire started in the dwellinghouso at the school, Greendale. The house was totally destroyed. The schoolroom, through the exertions of a number of willing friends, was saved. Some damage by removal of the books in the library was all the loss caused to the school. DUNEDIN, October 18. A six-roomed house in King Street, owned by Speight and Co., brewers, and occupied by Mr Robert Warren, >vas destroyed by fire early this morning. The house was valued at between £300 and £400, and the furniture at £225. The latter was insured in the New Zealand Office for £200. The insurance on the house is not known.
