IMPROVED ELECTRIC LIGHT.
One of the defects of the electric light is that when in operation it must be used to its full illuminating capacity, and that the lighting intensity cannot bo adapted to requirements such as is possible with gas. A new lamp which has been invented meets this defect. The new lamp has two filaments —a large one giving the brighter light, and a smaller- loop giving 2£ candle-power. The end of the lamp slipping into the holder has three contacts, upon two of which the pieces within the holder come "into connection, establishing tho circuit. When it is desired to change, say, from a 16 candle-power light to the glow, it is only necessary to give the bulb a slight turn in its socket, which has the effect of bringing the contacts of the smaller filament together, so that tho j brighter light is extinguished in favour of the duller one. To reverse tho effect, the lamp is simply turned in tho opposite direction. The change from one filament to the other is simply, and safely accomplished. There are no switches, and as tho current is not broken in changing from one filament to the other, no sparking is set up. But another important feature is that, if so desired, a still brighter light can be secured by giving the lamp half a turn, thereby combining the two filaments at one and the same time. Three different intensities are in this manner obtained; namely, 2£, 16 and 18$ candle-power respectively. Any combination up to 32 candle-power can be i secured.
