FIJI NATIVE LANDS.
In the' House of Lords the Earl of Crewe, in reply to a question, said that the tenure of unoccupied native lands in Fiji was communal. While rejecting the planters' proposal, and not in complete agreement with the alternative scheme, tfie Imperial Government was willing, with the consent of the Council and the chiefs, that some land immediately required i'or occupation should be leased to those willing to develop it, but only rarely should natives' land be sold. The proceeds in either case should be held in trust for the benefit of the existing community and their successors .
