THE FLOODS IN THE TAIERI DISTRICT.

DUNEDIN, July 15. A special meeting of the Taieri County Council to-day received a report of the county engineer estimating, as far as could at present he ascertained, the damage to roads and bridges at £5000. It was resolved to ask for a Government grant to that amount, a deputation to proceed to Wellington in support of the claim, and Mr Dcnitld Reid, member for Taieri, and theDunedin City members to be asked to assist the furtherance of the request. It was also resolved to telegraph to the Prime Minister , requesting that feed for starving stock should be railed to Taieri free, and that stock should be railed free to places where feed was obtainable. Instructions were given to the engineer to cut road embankments where necessary, and to construct temporary crossings. The water is still deep at'the lower-end of the Taieri Plain. Passenger traffic has been resumed on the Mosgiel-Outi am branch.' Snow has not yet been cleared from the Otago Central line near Wedderburn, and trains to-morrcw will not run past Ranfurly. At the upper end of the Taieri Plain it is.estimated that £1300 will, easily cover all losses to live stock, and about £1100 other losses. The losses in the Henley district cannot yet be estimated.

Snow ceased falling at Naseby late yesterday afternoon, and was succeeded by a sliart) frost. Men are still busy cutting tracks through the snow, and are likely to be engaged in this work for several days. Several residents are cut of coal, and are depending on neighbours for their supply. The stock of kerosene was sold out tp-day, and butter and milk are becoming scarce. DUNEDIN, July 16. It is snowing heavily at Cromwell, and it looks as though it would lie very heavily this time.

GISBORNE, July 15. Snow is falling heavily in the back country to-day.-

Captain Edwin telegraphs as follows: There will he westerly strong winds to a gale; the glass will fall.
