THE VACCINATION ACT.
; CHRISTCHURCH, -July 15. When dealing with a number of vaccination cases at the Court this morning, Mr V. G. Day, S.M., pointed out that an absurdity existed in the Vaccination Act. He stated that where a parent was charged with failing to vaccinate a child, and appeared ,to answer the charge, the law allowed,a\magistrate to make an order that opera-, tion should be carried out"Vwri/hin? aj snecified time; but if a parent\did ; -;:not' appear, the magistrate had no alternative but to fine the father or/mother of theschild. "It is an absurd position," he added, "but there-is the-Statute, and you cannot get away from it." Mr L. O. Williams, 'who.-instituted the proceedings, pointed out that the Magistrate could . fhve' the parents up to 40s, and to his mind they wolild 1 soon get tired of, that. Mr Day agreed that they could be brought, up every week, if necessary, but if they were willing to pay 4.0s every time they were charged, they- would be able .to set the law at Vdefiance. * 'Mr Day further said that as Parliamerit, ipis now sitting, he (Mr Williams) should make representations, with a view to getting the Act amend eel. :
