A fire at Bishop-Stortf ord, Hertfordshire, destroyed eight buildings connected with the Anchor Malting Company. The damage is estimated at £200,000.
OFFICERS ON HALF-PAY,
The War Office states that the recent placing of officers of the sth Lancers upon haif-pay is not due to causes detrimental to their character, as their service will bo utilised elsewhere, and the regiment is not inefficient.
SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED FRAUD.
Preston, alias Redgraj.)e, agent for Coleman,. was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude for conspiracy in forging arid'uttering with intent to defraud the London City and Midland Bank of £512. In the same connection Campbell, electrician, was sentenced to seven years', and McQueen, tailor, to five years'.
