RAILWAY STATION CROSSING.

To the Editor-

Sir, —I noticed in Saturday's issue of the Guardian that the Railway, Department have decided to erect an overhead bridge at the railway station. Now, sir, in my opinion, if a bridge is erected it will not settle the difficulty, as the people who arc most in need of it cannot iise it. I refer to women and nurse girls with perambulators, with children in them; Just imagine, seeing them trying to struggle iup and down those flights ■of steps with their perambulators! Why, sir, it's absurd. Then, again, there are-the. aged people, who are ever-increasing in'onr town: they also are entitled to every consideration. There are many of them who are scarcely able to walk on level ground, through infirmity; and how can they be expected to climb up and down a large flight of steps? There- are very many other reasons against the erection of a bridge and in favour of a sub-way, so that I hope the people of Ashburton will wake np and assist the Borough Council in demanding Lhat a sub-way be provided, as we hare an undoubted right to say what we will have. The only reason that I can see in favour of a bridge is the difference in the cost, and I contend that where the convenience and safety of the people are concerned the question of cost lias no right to come ill.
