WANTED—"A NICE JOB."
With a cheap panama crushed down upon his brow, he sat in a registry office this morning, and smiled amicably at the- lady in charge. "Got anything for me?" he asked, in tired tones. He could not plough, he could not cook, he could not milk, he could not do anything that required any large amount of skilL f'The woman read out tho application, for a man "willing to work" in the country, but he shook hh bead; he wanted a ''nice job"—fencing would do. There was nothing purely in the fencing line, though there were billets in which a knowledge of that work was requjr-aei. The man, a brawny person, was ''hard up," but he would noc do kitchen work in a hotel, "I'll call again," he mvilmered, and took his panama into the street, once more.
"Nine-tenths of them are like that," commented the registry lady. ."They want nice, easy, lazy jobs such as fencing alone, at a place where .tha ■ materials- are brought to them and they take their own time at putting them up.. Advertise for n man for rabbit poisoning, and you get hundreds-of applications. That is a soft job; a man can go- out in the' morning, lazing aboiit, and need not even bother about lay-' ing tlio poison. He can merely say he did it. But you scare- 'em away when yon ask for roal cood form bands. It is almost impossible to got men willing to toil reasonably hard."—Evening Post, November 26.
