FRUIT STEALERS.
To- the Editor.
Sir, —Blackbirds are very destructive to certain' fruits when ripe. A wellknown.' market gardener some years ago used strychnine, which he pricked into the fruit with a darning needle. Laurel berries was mostly used for the purpose when in season. Othev fruit was likewise poisoned. This stopped fruit stealers. Cautions were written on pieces of cardboard and placed in the orchard ; also an advertisement to that effect. Some boys go about stealing fruit. On Friday I saw three boys— two of them brothers; one was scrambling up a fence. One boy offered me cherries, which, of course, I refused, and I asked them not to steal. This was in a main thoroughfare in the borough, and in walking along certain streets I saw the footpath strewn with cherry stones and unripe cherries —evidently stolen fruit. Is it for this we are taxed—to, provide free education, to be robbed, annoyed, and insulted ? RESIDENT.
