The rose plots recently planted in the Domain, near the bowling green, are now coming on- very well, and are attracting a great deal of attention.
At Tinwald, on Friday, a boy aged ten, named Thomas Moody, dislocated his right arm through tripping over some wire.' The sufferer was taken to Dr Handcock, who attended to him, and he is now progressing favourably.
At Baring Square on .Saturday evening, the Temperance Band gave the first of a series of open air concerts. There was a large attendance, and the music was highly appreciated by the public' generally.
Yesterday was the sixty-third anniversary of Queen Alexandra's birthday, in connection with which the Post Office flag was flying to-day.
* While fishing at the river mouth on Saturday, Mr A. C. Jonassen caught 18 trout, weighing 541b, the size varying from l|lb to 51b each. Mr J. Thompson caught one weighing 101b, and Mr J. H. Stephens caught eight weighing 451b, the largest being 91b. Mr Slmry states that the fish are- now coming up stream,,and some good spore may be expected nearer town.
Mr J. S. Tennant, who lias been associated with Dr Cockayne in the botanical survey of the Auckland Islands, was formerly headmaster of the Ashburton High School, and Mr J. B. Mayne, also a member of the sub-an-tarctic expedition, was hcadmasterr of the Ashburton Borough School some years ago.
At the Nelson A. and P. show last week, Mr R. Y. Ferguson won prizes as follows : Best pony mare or gelding under 13.2 hands—Bob 1, Nancy 2 (10 entries). Both horses wore bred by 11. Tout, Longbeach. Pony, not exceeding I'l hands, to be ridden by girls under 14— R. V,. Ferguson (rider, Miss Drummond) 1, R. Y. Ferguson (rider, Miss M. Trask) 2 (6 entries).
It is stated that Mr ¥. F. Munro, formerly Mayor of Westport, will oppose Mr J. Col yin for the Buller seat at tho. general election.
!';■■ is reported that an effort will be made to 'have the EUesmere district, which has a valuation of nearly a million , for assessment, formed into a separate county from that of Selwyn, which is considered to be too wide in extent.
It is understood that, the affairs of, a local bankrupt are in tho hands of the Public Prosecutor.

Tin* Chertsey School Committee hold Ihi monthly meeting on Saturday evenii> when there wore present—-Messrs Smart (chairman), Wilkinson, McKee, Smart, and Dunstan. It was decided to close tho school on December sth,' to allow the pupils to attend the Ashburton school sports. The date for the annual school treat was fixed for the 20th of December, and it was decided to close the school for the Christmas holidays for five weeks from December 19 to February 3, 1908.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland, states: An unusual sight was witnessed on Friday on the Pacific Cable Company's steamer Iris, which was then in Calliope Dock, Deyonport. A swarm of bees took possession of a box in the bow of the ship, and despite the efforts of the officers and the crew, the bees refused to budge. They were at length dislodged from their position by being flooded out by water from the ship's hose, and although numbers were drowned, many returned and continued buzzing about the ship during the test of the day. .* .-
Speaking at the meeting of the Farmers' Union on Saturday afternoon, a member related an incident concerning a 'loafer who accepted ;his hospitaUtyand -afterwards was smoking reflectively. "Do you think," asked the loafer, "if the Government will take the duty off tobacco ?" "Whero are they going to get the money to go on with?" queried the farmer. " Oh, they could add a bit on to the land." He stated that he felt like kicking him out.
Tlio eighth annual sports meeting under the auspices of the North Canterbury Public Schools' Amateur Athletic Association was held in Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on Saturday. Fine weather was experienced, there was a very large attendance, and the gathering eclipsed the best of its predecessors in almost every respect. The Aehburton Borough and Hampstead schools were - rejjj,-esen ted with their cadet corps, which took part in the grand spectacular march past—their parade numbers being 46 and 47 respectively. The Hampstead boys did not compete in the cadet company drill competition in which the eleven entrants were as follows : New Brighton, West Christchurch, Sydenham, Kaiapoi, Normal, Ashburton, Woolston, Richmond, Waltham, East Christchurch, and Addington. The Borough School bugler (WWillers), in competition with four others, secured premier honours ; but otherwise the Ashburton boys were not successful.
