A member of the Guardian literary staff received the following telegram (winch speaks for itself) just as the paper was going to press: "Borough Cadets won drill competition at Lancaster Park.—J. W. McGregor."
The vital statistics of Ashbtirton for the month of November are: Births— Male, 12; female, 12; total, 24. Deaths —Male, 8; female, 1; total, 9. Marriage—4. The figures for the corresponding month last year were: Births 30; deaths, 9; marriages, 9. Of the deaths this month there were 5 of persons between 75 and 95, and 3 between 60 and .75; 1 due to accident.
At one stage of the proceedings of the Conciliation Board at Leeston on Friday, Mr J. McLachlan, member for Ashburtbn, attempted to take part in the business. Speaking from the end of the hall, he began : "Mr Chairman, I don't know whether I am in order or not " The Chairman (Mr Minson) was quite ready, and declared decisively : " You are better in order when you are sitting down and keeping quiet." Messrs M. Murphy and J. Studholme have been re-elected as representatives respectively of the members of Parliament and the Agricultural and Pastoral Associations on the Board of Governors of Lincoln College.*
The Conciliation Board will sit at Timaru on Monday to hear evidence in the farm labourers' dispute. The members will leave Christchurch by the first express, and the hearing will open at Timaru at 1 p.m. The sittings are expected to last a week. The Board will commence the taking of evidence at Ashburton on December 17th.
