The ship Pellegrinao, which left Newcastle (New South Wales) on July 31st, bound to Antofagasta, Chili, with a cargo of coal, is reported missing at | Lloyd's, and a re-insurance rate of P0 guineas is asked. Mr Zappa* a Greek resident of Rou- ] mania, has bequeathed a million francs to Greece, to ensure the continuance of the Olympic games. THE NASI CASE.
'. ROME; November 29. The Nasi prosecution has raised an intense anti-Government ' agitation in Sicily, and tho image of Nasi is enshrined in many localities. The refusal to grant him bail was due to the discovery of a plot to encompass his flight. BARBAROUS BRIGANDS. Brigands near Naples captured and tortured the Marquis di Cito, with a view to ransom. The ringleader of the brigands, a former policeman, has been arrested. * ARREST OF PLOTTERS. / GETINJE, November 29. Six leaders of the Montenegrin Opposition, including two former Ministers, have been arrested in connection with the recent plot. SHIP ON FIRE.
A CONJECTURE. Received November 30, 8.49 a.m. LONDON, November 29. The vessel sighted as burning on August 23rd, in latitude 325, longitude 82, may possibly bo the barque Silverhorn, overdue, at Iquique, from Newcastle. Nothing was seen of the crew. WAGES—A RECOMMENDATION. At yesterday's conference of the Miners' Federation it was recommended that when new wages agreements were made, the standard should be 30 per cent above the rate of 1879 and 1888. INCOME TAX IN AUSTRALIA. STATE AND COMMONWEALTH. In cases involving the liability of Commonwealth officials to pay income tax, the Privy Council was petitioned direct by Victoria and New South Wales for leave to appeal against the decision of the High Court, which had held that Federal officers' salaries were not liable to taxation by the States ; but the Judicial Committee refused leave to appeal without calling on counsel for the Commonwealth. No order was made as to costs. Their Lordships will give their decision later.
