OPINION OF THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION.

(Our Own Correspondents.) WELLINGTON, August 9. In the course of a brief chat this morning, the Hon. G. Fowlds made it clear to mo that the Education Department strongly objected to spend a large sum of money on the Ashburton i High School. He said that the De-' partmeut did not mind the Board, building a magnificent Carnegie hall if it had a fancy for it, but what the authorities wished to see was the erection of a properly-equipped science room Once that was done, the Board could have as fine a Carnegie hall as it lured. The present plans do not provide for a satisfactory science room tind that is the Department's objection. In will not find any more money by way of special grant. .
