UPPER ASHBURTON ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Upper Ashburton Road Board was held on Monday. Present—Messrs C. J. Harper (chairman), J. Farrell, A. Horsey, M. Stitt, J. Tucker and o. Allen. - •

The following correspondence was received :

Irom tho Valuation Department, forwarding idvm of declaration which, when duly made and signed by the chairman or treasurer and returned, will entitle the Board to the amount of subsidy duo for the year 1906-1907. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, informing the Board that its proposal submitted for the expenditure of "thirds" accrued from sections at Westerfield had been approved, and the Receiver of Land Revenue authorised to pay over to the Board's credit the sum now in hand. ,

From the Ashburton County Council, asking for the duplicate returns re-/ quired by the Treasury.—The" clerk stated the matter had been attended to. '•.■'■■■■' ■'"'■■ - -

From the Ocean Accident aiid Guar an tee Corporation, notifying the Board that its employers' liability and workmen's condensation policy No. 363,004 will expire oil April 27; and asking that the wage certificate be completed in-order that the premium may be adjusted.—The clerk was instructed to attend to the mattei\ , From the Ashburton District School, | with reference to the cutting down of trees growing on the Allenton School grounds, and asking the Board if it would consider it sufficient if the trees were topped, say, 30 feet from the ground.—lt was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the member for the ward, with power to act. With reference to the Board's account at the bank, the following resolution was passed: "That this Board, in anticipation of its current revenue, do borrow from its bankers, the Union Bank of Australia, Limited, from time to time as required, by way of overdraft, the sum of £1000 or any sum not exceeding that amount, at interest at the rate of per centum per anI'num, or at the option of the bank at the current rate or rates from time to j time charged by the said bank for overdrafts at Ashburton; such interest to I be computed, as from the respective days of the moneys being advanced from the bank, and to be considered accruing from day to day, and to be payable on demand, but unless and until demanded to be payable on the last days of February and August in each year, and to be turned into principal on the balancing of the books of the bank on these days and thenceforth to become principal,. and bear interest accordingly at the rate before mentioned. (2) That the moneys so to be borrowed by way of overdraft shall be drawn out of the said bank by cheques signed by the of the said Board, and countersigned by any two members of the said Board —all members being appointed by the said Board for that purpose—and every cheque so drawn and countersigned shall be a sufficient authority to the bank to advance the amount therein named by way of overdraft to the and to charge

the account kept with the said bank with that uiuount and with interest and compound interest thereon in terms of the above resolution No. 1."

Mr R. Lowe, ranger, reported with regard to cattle grazing on the Hinds roads, and it was resolved that Mr Lowe be instructed to take.the neces--sary proceedings to have the grazing of stock on the roads put a stop to. Mr R. C. Patton asked permission to plough gorse on roads adjoining his property.—Resolved that the matter be left iii the hands of the member for the ward. .

With reference to Mr West's application to plough gorse on roads adjoining his property, tiie clerk was instructed to inform him he could plough the cross-road between his property and Mr .Ryan's.

The clerk was instructed to make the following alterations, subject to ail rates being paid to date: From Mr Thos*. Clark to Mr Fredk. Wendleborn, Lot 42, part 8787, 1 acre 3 roods y poles; from Mr A. J. W. Thorne to Mrs M. M. Digby, R.S. 30,920, 31,360, 33,080 and 28,220, 370 acres 2 roods 23 poles; from Mr Thos. Scott to Mrs Mary Stewart, Lot 42, part 8767, 4903, 1 acre 0 roods 29 poles; from Mr G. ; Argyle to Mr C. H. Argyle, part 43, part 4903, 8767, 2 roods 14 poles; from Mrs Sutherland to Mr Geo. Bolton, 'part 23,057, 23,671, 46 acres 1 rood 17 porches, and Res. 2023, of 50 acres. Mr T. Hurley interviewed the Board in regard to fencing in a reserve o:i the Laghmor road.—The Board decided to inspect the reserve, and not permit any more shingle to be taken from it without the Board's permission. Accounts amounting to £394 9s 9d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
