New Season's W^eat.—Samples of this season's wheat are already being offered to millers and grain merchants, and a miller informs us that a sample which was submitted to him the other day was the beat he has handled in thia county for many years.

before Mr K. Alcorn, J.P f , Acting: Coroner. The enquiry had been adjourned so that

the contents of the stomach could be sent to the Colonial Analyst for analysis. Plainolothes Constable McLennan now produced the report of Mr A. A. Biokerton, which was to the effect that Inhere was no trace of ptrmaine or other poisoning. The jury ■icoordingly returned a verdict in accordance with the inedioal evidence that death was due to apoplexy.

National Scholarship.—ln the list of

North Canterbury wiunera of national scholarships, the name of D. W. McClurg (Ashburton Borough Sohool) appears first, with 598 marks.

Athletic Chami'ionship . Meeting.— There was a large attendance at the first day of the ohampionship meeting promoted by the N.Z. Athletic Union at the Exhibition sports ground yesterday. The programme included flat races—championship and handioap—wrestling, jumping, weightthrowing, and Highland music and dancing, fn the Highland Pipe Band Competition, quicksteps, the Tnvercargill Band was first, with Timaru second, and Otago third, while in the "Own Selections" Competition. Timaru was first, Tnvercargill second, and Oamara third. In the athletic events J. Healy got third in the hop, Btep, and jump.

Train Service Alterations. —The 8.30 a.m. train from Titnaru to (Jhriatohurch, and the 10.45 p.m. Thursday train from Christehuroh to Timaru will not run after January 31st. On Thursday, February 7th, and each Thursday there if ter, a late train, taking passengers from Chriatchurch and Addington, and setting down where required after passing Hornby, will leave Christchuroh for Ashburton at 10.45 p.m., and arrive at Ashburton at 12.50 a.m. on Fridays.
