The Late Colonel Pitt.

The Government steamer Tutanekai. carrying the body of the late Hon. A. Pitt to Nelson for interment, left Lyttelton at 11.30 on Monday night. The passengers by the steamer were j—The Premier (Sir Joseph Ward), Lady Ward, Mr B. M. Wilson (private secretary to the Premier) Mr E. N, G. Poulton (private secretary to the late Attorney-General), Miss Pitt and Mrs Dnnoan Macdonald, (daughters of the deceased.) After the vessel oleared the moles guns were fired from Fort Jervois, Ripa Island, at intervals of a minute, until she cleared the heads.

Speaking to a " Lyttelton Times " reporter on Monday, the Premier said: " I have received numerous communications from all over the country, and from members of both branches of the Legislature— I may particularly mention one from Christ-churoh-—that I received from the Speaker of the Legislative Council, the Hon. C. C. Bowen. I have also received cables from Australia, all of the same tenor—one universal expression of deep regret at Mr Pitt's death. In the Legislative Council the late Mr Pitt combined tact and courtesy with firmness of character that made him a most capable leader; and with those who did not see politically with him as well as with those who did so he created strong ties of friendship."

Nblsow, Nov. 20 At the Court to-day a feeling tribute was paid to the memory of Colonel Pitt, who had pleaded there so many yearß. Messrs Eyre Kenny, S.M., and members of the Law Society testified to the worth of the deceased.

The pall bearers at to-morrow's funeral are to be Sir Joseph Ward, Messrs Mcfitowan, McNab, Duncan, C. T. Fell, and E. B. and P. Moore (partners in the firm of Pitt and Moore), and Mr Duncan McDonald, son-in-law of the deceased.
