Tragic Result of Thefts.
In the early part of last week (says the " Lyttelton Times ") a sum of about JI2O was stolen from a lady residing in a boardinghouse in Armagh Street, kept by Mrs Elizabeth Everest. The money was taken from a drawer in the bedroom, and though the police were called in, the thief was not discovered. The lady whose money had been taken left the house, and secured fresh lodgings elsewhere. On succeeding nights, it is stated, other boarders suffered from the depredations of the thief, and as the culprit could not be found, several other persons left the house.
The affair had a tragio termination on Monday, when Mrs Everest, who was not in strong health, died suddenly. There seems little doubt that her death was hastened by worry regarding the thefts. When seen last night, the police were unable to throw any light on the matter of the thefts.
