Musical Examinations—The local practical examinations under the auspices of the Associated Board of the Royal Aoadamy of Music and the Royal College of Musio were held m the Templar Hall today. The examiner was Mrs Arthur Wesche, and the Rev. A. Peters was superviaor. The maximum marks were 150,100 being required to pass and 130 to secure honours. Eleven candidates presented themselves here, and though none secured honours, all, with one exception paseed, the majority with credit, Those who secured passes were :—Pianoforte (advanced)— Mary Beatrice Claridge, 127; Violin — Rewi Jones (Miss M. Jones, teacher), 101; piano (all taught by Miss Lily Watt)— Ruby Dent, 106 ; Annie MoLeod, 102 ; May Wilson, 106 ; James Allen, 123 ; May Elliott 127 ; Frances Greenslade, 120 ; Lily Schneider, 119 ; Irene Smith 115. Ashburton Gas, Coal and Coke Compant—At tho annual meeting of the shareholders of the Ashburton Gas, Coal and Coke Co. te-day there were aeven shareholders present and Mr T. Bullock occupied the chair. A recommendation m the annual report that a dividend of eight per cent, should be paid was adopted. Mr Thomas Bullock was re-eleoted chairman of directors. A full report of the meeting will appear m to-morrow's issue. Sir William Steward, who has been m indifferent health for some time, ia now lying at a private hospital m Wellington seriously indisposed. Mr Alexander Stewart, who has been headmaster of the Union street school m Dunedin ever since it opened, 44 years ago, will retire from the Otago Education Board's service with a pension, at the end of the present year. Miss Hesther Maolean, the newly appointed Assistant Inspector of Hospitals, Asylums, and Charitable Institutions, is paying a visit to the various institutions m the North Island, under the guidance of Mrs Grace Neill, her predecessor, New Zealand has been constituted a separate country for purposes of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, and the right to send a delegate to the triennial conference at Manchester, England, has been given to this country, Mr W. H. Hampton, of Wellington, has been elected the Erst delegate. The Minister for Lands has deoided to make purchases from the choicest herds m the colony with the object of still further rateingthe status of the dairy herd on the State experimental farm at Levin.
