John Buckley, aged 50 years, whilst riding through Motu bush, became entangled in a tree and injured his spine. He was brought 50 miles to Gisborne, but died in the hospital

Nathaniel Grace, a sheep farmer, aged G5, residing at Gladstono, died this lnornirjg ot hemonhage of the brain. Ho was in the hay field yesterday. Deceased was a Past Grand Lodge officer, and will be accorded a Masonic funeral. He was well known in sporting circles, and was for many years connected with the Wellington Kacing Club.

The Chess Championship tourney waa • ntinued to-day. Tn the eighth round B. Mason beat Adair; the game Davies v. Gifford was drawn; Pleasants beat Hamel j J. Mason beat Cleland ; Kelling beat Forsyth; at present Davies and Miles lead with five wins and two losses each; Barnes has 4£ wins and 1$ losses; B. Mason and Forsyth 4 wins and 2 losses each ; Cleland, Gifford, and Pleasantg 4 w,ins and 3 losses each.
