The Shearers' Dispute.
REFUSING TO GIVE EVIDENCE,
THE DEFENDANTS PINED.

The reserved judgment was given in the case of the witnesses who refused to give evidence before the Royal Commission in the shearing dispute. In the first case the Court upheld the objection of counsel for the defendants that the defendants Leahy and Mair, not having been sworn, could not have been compelled to answer questions, and dismissed the information. In the second case, Leahy and Mair were charged with refusing to be sworn, and six other v,ritnfcsses with, failing to attend to give evidence before the Commiss'on. The Magistrate considered the evidence to justify convictions. Leahy and cne other were fined 20s, with 5s 6d costs, or the alternative of 48 hours' light labour ; Mair and five others £20, or seven days' light labour. With a view to giving time to appeal, defendants have been allowed till June 30 to pay the fines.
