In the Federal House, Mr Barton, In reply to a question, stated that negotiation! wi»re proceeding with the British and French Governments with reference to creating a tribunal to deal with the question of land grants to the New Hebrides, Th« Federal Government were also negotiating with Messrs Burns, Philp and Go, with reference to substituting white for coloured labour on the mail steamers running between the New Hebrides and Australia. He hoped to be abla to announoe In fcfae course of a few days that) Bums, Phllp and Co would be prepared to throw open huge areas, which they held in the New Hebrides to settlers on advantageous terms. Such a scheme might induce settlement, and aeb as a counterfoil to French settlement.
