The Ashburton Borough Counoil met last evening, Present—.His Worship the Mayoi (in the chair), Councillors Olark, Willis, Held, Davis, Andrew., and Davison. balanob at bank The Mayor reported the balance ab the Bank bo be dr, £1555 2a lOd, and amount, reoelved from all sources since lasb meeting £101 15s 4d. 00_t_.FSPOND_Jl.eECorrespondence v.&s read and dealt wibh as follows :•— From the Counby Council, applying for £20 water supply rent — Received, and amount ordered to be paid. From Jaa Pain & Sons re fireworks for Coronation—Reoeived, From Stokes and Biokerton, re fireworks for Coronation—Received. From Mr vV W Smith, for transfer of Reserve T. B.ll46—Transfer granted. From Mr G L Sandrey, r. metalling 8< E. Bait. The Postmaster applying for permission bo erect bicycle stand and posts outside the Post Office—Permission was given to erect the structure in Cameron Sbreeb. From She Secretary for Agriculture, forwarding certificates of registration ot abattoirs—Received. Ib was decided thab killing shall oommertce ab Fairfield on April Ist. From the Borough solicitors forwarding Mr Geo Harper's opinio<_ re Friedlander Bros,' lease—Reo.ived. From Mr T Bullock applying for permission to erect a building in East Street— ' Granted, WORKS COMMITTEE. Cr Davison, Chairman of the Works Committee, reported thab there had been no meeting of the Committee, and said thab ib was time for the water race, to be oleanedi A culvert on the alford Forest Eoad would need attention INSPECTOR'S REPOKT. The Inspector's report showed thab tho yards were in good consii-ion A case of scarlet fever had been reported to him by a doctor, and he had inspected the premises. The Inspector asked thab ho be allowed to register dogs ab the beginnicg of the year, as thab was bhe Counby Council', practice Cr Reid moved that this be done. Cr Davis supported. The Mayor bhoughb bhe ranger should be given power bo register ab the beginning of the year. Cr Reid then moved thab notice be given to dog owners to register, and after bhat bhe Inspector be given instructions to sue. Or Andrews seconded, and bhe motion waa carried* FOREMAN'S REPORT The Foreman of Works reported thab the labor gang had been employed during the fortnight on general maintainonce woik. The report wa. received. QUESTIONS. Or Willis asked if acy more had been heard from tha Premier re the town olook, bhe Mayor roplled th .b there had nob» THE LOAN. Cr Willis moved for a return of asphalting and concrete channelling that_had}been done sinoe the loan had raised, Cr Reid seconded the motion. Or Andrews was glad bhe matter had coma upi The asphalting was to be done where there was already channelling, The motion was oarried. NEW BUSINESS Or Clark moved tint tha Valuer be Instructed bo as.ess bhe Gas Company's main., wibh a view to rating them. Cr Willis seconded the motion pro forma, bub thought that time should be given for consideration of the question, whioh waß an important one. Cr Davis supported the motion. The Mayor thought lb was tho duby of the Oouuoil to tax the Company like any prlvabe p-rson. They would wanb all the rates they could geU Or Reid also supported the motion. The resolution was carried, Cr Willis moved thab a return bin prepared of the payments made for blacksmithieg work done for the Council during the past \ twelve months, Cr Davis seconded, bub the mobion was lost, i IHE NEW BOLL* Ib was decided to consider the now roll at | the nest ordinary meeting: BOHOUGK LEASES; The Counoil then went into Committee to consider tho opinion given by Mr Harper re lease of section to Messrs Friedlander Bros, and on resuming, the Vlayor reported that the Council could not depart from tha resolution previously passed, Messrs Friedlander Bros to bo advised accordingly. The Council then sab as a DOMAIN BOARD, The Curator's reporb abated thab bhere had been a good deal to do in clearing away paper and rubbish after the picnic., which had recently taken place in bhe Domain,
