July 16 M* Findley, who was expelled from the H >uae for publishing in the Tocsin the Irish libel on the King. *»as defeated by Mr Deegan at Hast Melbourne by nearly two to one. A scene occurred at a polling booth owing to a camera being used in the booth for the purpose of aiding the detection of impersonators. The Government ordered the discontinuance of the practice, but before effect waa given to tbe order Dr Maloney, a member of the Assembly, entering the booth, f-aw the camera and smashed it.
The Premier sought the advice of the Imperial Government with regard to seizing and suppressing ihe 'focsifi. Mr Chamberlain replied deprecating such actions.
The leader of the Opposition protested against ths Government seeking advice. They should have taken the whole responsibility, To do as they aid was to place the State in a position of being little more than a Crown Colony.
