The Cable Question. ____.—» ■->.—- United Press Association—By EleotriTelegraph—Copyright Brisbane, March 4 Mr Philip, replying to Mr Lyne, in reference to the Cape cable, says :- " The Eastern Extension Company have conceded the reductions merely with the view of averting the competition of the Pacific cable. If granted, these would render the Pacific cable impossible, and the Company would secure a monopoly all the time, which would more than recompense them for the proposed reductions. It appears infinitely preferable to risk for the time vindictive action On the part of the company, which you consider probable, than loose a magnificent opportunity of securing an all-British cable under Stata control, which will also prove a valuable asset as regards any unreasonable increase of rates by the company at the expiration of the existing agreement.
