The County Council.—Mr B. G. Wright was the only candidate nominated to-day to represent the Mount Somers riding m the Ashburton County Council, and was therefere declared duly elected. H. Company.—Aa the uniforms for H. Company have now arrived and have been tervel out, it is expected that the muster to-night will be very full, an 1 m uniform. The Mayoralty.—Mr Collins having retired from the Mayoral contest m favour of Mr Friedlander, who is therefore now elected we congratulate Mr Collins on his magnanimity m allowing Mr Friedlander to have an opportunity of completing the loan of pro posals which he has begun, and also on saving the municipality the goat of a contested election. Sudden Deaths at Napier —Two sudden deaths are reported from Napier. James Coßgrove, a oab driver, was found dead m bed on Saturday. At the inquest the jury found that death had been due to syncope. Mary SheehaD, wife of Mr Sheehan, baker, died last evening. She had been ailing; for a few days, but an ir quest was deemed necessary. —Press Association telegram, The rise m the price of wool and the firat state of the London market will mean increasing returns of many thousands of pounds for the farmers of Canterbury alone this year. Aa a natural consequence, following the advanced cost of the raw material, alt the principal manufacturers of woollen goodl have recently issued revived price lists showing a eonsiderabi rise m the prices of all Tweeds, Coatings, Vicugnas, &c. Messrs Ckaighead & Bebrtman of this town, howi ever, with their usual foresight, took time by i the forelock, and cabled Home direct early m May for a large shipment of the most fashionable Suitings for the approaching Spring season. They also secured large parcels from the principal New Zealand mills U9t before the rise, and will give their customers the full benefit of their timely contracts. Messrs Craighead and Berryman invite an early inspection of their New Goods. Their leading line of Men's Suits to 1 measure for £3 10s, made up m their wellknown style and fit, should convince the most sceptical of their sterling values
