LAWN TENNIS.
Metliven v. Mcl rose. The Methven Domain presented an animated appearance on Thursday, the occasion being a lawn tennis match between sides representing the Methven and Melrose Clubs. On their arrival at Methven the visitors were entertained by the local club to luncheon, which proved very refreshing after the loDg journey. Conclusions were then tried, some of the games being very close and causing immense excitement, the Melrose Club eventually winning by the very email majority of two points. The Methven CJub, of about forty members, was this season organised by the Rev. J. R. Clark_ for the purpose of promoting healthy exercise and bringing the young people together, and the members are heartily to be congratulated on making such an able stand iv their initial match. After afternoon tea bad been partaken of and a group of photos taken by Mr J. Mitohel), Mr H. A. Gatee, Captain of the Melroae Club, called for three hearty cheers for the ladies who had so generously dispensed refreshments, the Rev. J. Clark, and for all who had been the means of their spending such an enjoyable afternoon. Mr Clark, m a few appropriate words, acknowledged the compliment. 1 At the conclusion of the match, playing was continued by other promising members of the club, so that the return match may be looked forward to with additional interest.' The home journey waa enlivened with singing and alleged witicisms, Ashburton being reached a few minutes before nine o'clock. The following are the results : — Ladies' Singles — Misß Clark (Methven) beat Miss Gates (Melrose) 30 21, Miss Potter (Melrose) beat Mra Trumper (Methven) 30-29. Ladies' Doubles — Mrs Trumper and Mis« Clark (Methven) beat Misses Gates and Potter (Melrose) 30-15, Misses Potter and U. Cookson (Melrose) beat Mrs Trumper and Mro Young (Methven) 30 20. Gentlemen's Doubles-— Messrs Barton and Meyenberg (Melrose) beat Messrs P. Clark /and R. Sievwrighb (Methven) 30-19, Meßsrs Darb and Til ley (Me hveu) beat Messes Shearman and Perm (Melrose) 30-17, Messrs Purchase and Alcorn (Melrose) beat Messrs Clark and Tilley (Methven) 30-20. Gentlemen's Singles— Tilley (Methven) beat Meyenberg (Melrose) 20 18, shearman (Melrose) beat Dart (Melhven) 30-22. Combined Doubles — Miss Clark and Mr Dart (Methven) beat Miss Potter and Mr Purchase (Melrose) 30-28, Miss Gates and Mr Perm (Melroae) beat Mrs Truncper and Mr Tilley (Methven) 3018. Total-Melrose, 280 ; Methven, 278.
