The Silverstream Murder.
Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— WBfc&iNOTON, Pecember 6 I The trial of Philpott, alias Stanhope, for the murder of Hawthorne began before Mr Haselden, 8.M., this morning. Mr Bell appeared for the Crown. The only new evidence so far is the production of a letter of September 13th, written by Stanh|pe professedly on behalf of Hawthorne. The letter is addressed to the latter's sister, and speaks of his being unable to work owing to a poisoned hand, and expressed gratitude to Stanhope for advancing him money. In a postscript in his own name Stanhope deprecates the expressions relating to himself, and protests against the supposition that he could possibly ask for the money he had advanced. Tjiere was considerable discussion upon the document, Mr Hindmarsh, for the prisoner, objecting to its publication, but he was overruled. The case is expected to last over to-morrow.
